Description
A barn, likely dating from the late 17th or very early 18th century, and raised and altered in the later 19th century, stands approximately 50 metres west of Towneley Farmhouse. The barn is constructed of coursed squared sandstone rubble with large quoins, and has a slate roof. Its plan is a T-shape, with a main range running roughly east-west, and a notably unusual multi-function porch-wing centrally positioned on the north side. This wing has a shallow porch opposite it at the rear, and later 19th-century lean-to cart sheds are attached to the front, flanking the central wing, but these are not considered of special interest.
The three-story, three-window porch-wing features a chamfered plinth, a depressed-arched wagon entrance flanked by small, chamfered one-light windows at ground and first floor levels. These windows are unglazed, mostly with vertical cast-iron bars. The second floor has coupled two-light, double-chamfered mullioned windows; the window on the left side lacks a mullion and is also unglazed, with horizontal iron bars. Above these is a small one-light window. The gable has ridged coping with kneelers, and a large cruciform cast-iron finial resembling a weather vane. Within the entrance, there are chamfered square-headed doorways on each side, alongside harr-hung double doors secured with cast-iron harr-pins and sockets. Return sides of the porch-wing have two-light mullioned windows to the upper level.
The main range has a chamfered plinth and some blocked slit-breathers at ground floor level, now hidden by the added cart sheds. Each gable wall has three shippon doorways at ground floor level; the central doorway has been enlarged, while the one at the west end is flanked by 19th-century windows. The other two doorways have chamfered surrounds but are now blocked. The upper floor includes a chamfered loading doorway in the center (the one at the east end is blocked) and a vertical owl-hole near the apex. The gables feature coping similar to that of the porch.
Inside, the barn has 19th-century bolted queen-post roof trusses and lofts on both sides. The barn forms a group with Towneley Farmhouse, located approximately 50 metres to the east.
