Description

The gates, gate piers, and railings at the former west entrance to Sandywell Park date from the 18th century and are located at the end of a lime tree avenue leading away from the facade of the park. The structure features finely dressed limestone piers that are square in shape, topped with moulded cappings and large urn finials that have reeded and fluted decoration. The double gates are made of cast iron and adorned with wrought iron scrollwork near the bottom. Above the gates is a fine wrought iron overthrow that includes foliate scrollwork and a fleur de lys, along with a monogram and a crown-like feature above it, topped by a torso. The railings are set into a low wall, curving away on either side of the gateway before running parallel to the road, and they terminate in square piers with moulded cappings that once had urn finials.
