Description
This pair of cottages, originally three, dates from the 18th century and was renovated in the 20th century under the patronage of Lawrence Johnston. They are constructed of squared limestone rubble with weatherboarding around the dormer windows and feature thatched roofs.
Cottage No. 3, on the right, has ashlar gable end stacks with moulded tops and skirtings, along with twin stacks on the left. Cottage No. 5 has a rectangular brick stack at the left gable end. Both cottages are single storey with attics, each lit by two dormers that have thatched hoods. No. 5 includes a single storey extension that is set back from the facade, connecting it to No. 3.
The windows consist of 2 and 3-light 20th-century metal casements with leaded panes. There is also a 3-light, flat chamfered stone-mullioned window on the ground floor to the left of No. 3. Access to No. 3 is now through a 20th-century door at the right gable end, while a painted plank door with strap hinges is located in the facade, to the right of the stone mullioned window. No. 5 features a plank door towards its right gable end. This property is managed by the National Trust.
