Description
Laverton House is a large house located in a row on the east side of Fairford Market Place. It was originally built in the late 17th century and was raised and extended in the 18th century. The building features a rubble stone base with random coursed rubble above, and two flush quoins remain to mark the original end wall, with alternating flush quoins at the right-hand corner. The stone slate roof originally had end stacks, but the right-hand stack has been raised in brick and there is a smaller stone end stack to the far right with an offset and moulded cornice.
The house has a single front range with a small lower rear wing and additional 20th-century extensions that are not of special interest. It stands three storeys tall and has five windows: paired small casements on the second floor and four-pane sashes on the first floor, with a line of the original wall plate visible above the four windows to the left, indicating that the window openings have probably been lowered. The ground floor features several blocked openings, a throughway to the left, and two large canted bays likely from the early 19th century with plate glass sashes. Between the bays is a large wide stone portico supported by two columns, with a flat hood that has a plain frieze and moulded cornice. The entrance includes a six-panel door with the top four panels glazed, the lower two are bolection moulded, and there are sidelights. Inside, there is a stone flag floor in the hall and a fine baluster stair.
