Description
The Chanting House is a former inn located on the west side of Market Place in Fairford. The south end of the building likely dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century, while the remainder was constructed in the late 17th century to early 18th century. It has been recorded as an inn since 1634. The building features an ashlar front with a rubble rear, a half-timbered cross range to the south, a stone slate roof, a stone ridge stack, and an external stone stack on the timber-framed section.
The structure consists of a single front range with a cross range to the south and an adjoining single-storey range, along with a rear range that includes stables curving towards the northwest. It is two storeys high, with close studding on the timber framing and stone infill on the south side and the gable of the east side. Notable features include a large moulded bressumer, two small 12-pane sash windows, and stone infill below with a Yorkshire sliding sash window, a timber lintel, and a vertical battened door. The east side has 19th-century two and three-light stone mullions.
The facade facing Market Place has six windows, five of which are original 12-pane sashes, and a two-storey canted bay on the far right with 8/12/8-pane sashes. The ground floor features a 20th-century canted bay on the left, a chamfered basket arch stone doorway with a 20th-century glazed door and sidelights, and three 12-pane sashes. The stables at the rear have three ground floor plank door openings on the outer curved edge to the south and one recessed loft door with a cat hole. There is a large cart entrance on the inner face of the curve, and the remainder of the rear has scattered fenestration, mostly consisting of casements.
