Description
The stable block at Barrington Grove dates from the late 18th to early 19th century, with some mid to late 19th-century features. The main block is constructed of ashlar and coursed squared and dressed limestone, while the smaller block is made of coursed squared and dressed limestone as well. Both ranges have stone slate roofs, and the stumps of ashlar stacks have been repaired in brick. The stable block consists of two ranges, one larger than the other, connected by a wall to form an 'L' shape. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed garage that is not of special interest.
The larger block is two stories high with an eight-windowed facade. The first floor features nine-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has two 16-pane sashes with horns flanking a single plank doorway. There are also three 20th-century double plank doorways on the lower right, a single-width plank doorway with a fanlight above to the left, and a double plank doorway on the lower left. The building has off-the-ridge and gable-end stacks, flat coping at the gable ends, and a ball finial at the left gable end.
The smaller block is also two stories tall and has two circular windows on the first floor. The ground floor features two 2-light casements with glazing bars and fanlights, all with raised dressed stone surrounds. There are two plank doors, also with fanlights and raised dressed surrounds, on the ground floor. Stone steps lead up to the loft at the right gable end, and there is a diamond-shaped ventilation hole within a dressed circular surround above. The gable ends have flat coping and a ball finial at the right end, as well as the remains of a weathervane at the left gable end. The linking wall has a single-width opening to the left. The interior of the stable block has not been inspected.
