Description

Barrington Mill is a former mill and house, dated and initialled '17 W.C. 94'. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and ashlar stacks. The main structure has a rectangular plan with a right gable end extension that includes a washhouse and bakehouse at the rear. The main body is two storeys high with an attic, which is illuminated by three 20th-century roof dormers. The mill occupies the three left-hand bays, with the mill stream flowing beneath the left-hand bay.

To the right is a three-windowed miller's house, featuring 16-pane and 20-pane sash windows set within dressed stone surrounds. The central entrance has a 18th-century six-panel door within a flat-chamfered surround, topped by a flat canopy supported on moulded brackets. The former mill has three 2-light wooden casements with horizontal glazing bars, and there is a 6-pane wooden casement on the first floor, which was formerly a doorway. Segmental-headed openings on the ground floor of the left-hand bay, now fitted with 20th-century casements, indicate where the undershot water wheel used to be located (now removed). There is a stable-type door off-centre to the right of the mill building, and a two-light stone-mullioned casement in the left gable end lighting the attic. The single-storey extension to the right features a plank door with a single pane at the top and a two-light stone-mullioned casement. The gable ends have flat coping, and there are axial and gable-end stacks. The mill remained operational until around 1948.
