Description

West End Mill is a water mill and attached house, now functioning as a single residence, dating from the early 18th century. The building is constructed of dressed limestone and features a tiled roof, with 20th-century brick stacks on the right and at the rear outshut. The former miller's house includes an integral outshut.

It is a two-storey structure with six windows, fitted with casements. There is a 20th-century door with sidelights to the left of the center, a planked door and a 20th-century mullioned casement to the left, and two 3-light mullioned casements along with a blocked doorway to the right. The first floor has five original 2-light mullioned casements and a pivot-hung 20th-century window in the former loading bay above the door. The building features coped verges, with the left gable topped by a ball finial.

The right return has a glazed door and a 2-light mullioned casement on the ground floor, while the first floor includes a pivot-hung window and a single chamfered light in the attic. The left return has a 20th-century casement in the loft. The rear outshut to the left contains a glazed door, 2-light mullioned casements, and nine 20th-century roof lights. The rear of the mill has a round arch over a dry mill race and 20th-century French windows above.

Inside, the mill retains most of its machinery in situ, including a cast-iron water wheel with paddles in a closed mill race, gearing wheels on the ground floor, and two millstones in the first-floor sitting room. The former miller's house features chamfered beams and an open fireplace with a segmental brick lintel on brick jambs. The mill was operational until 1939.
