Description
Paper Mill Cottages is a row of three cottages that were partially converted from a former mill building. They date from the 18th century to the mid-19th century and were constructed in at least three phases. The cottages are built from coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof that features ashlar and brick stacks, along with some slate roofing on rear extensions. The structure has a long rectangular plan with the former mill located at the left gable end and lean-to extensions at the rear.
The cottages are two-storeys high with an attic. No 1, located at the right-hand end of the row, is from the mid to late 18th century and has a two-windowed facade with large sliding sashes that include glazing bars. All windows have segmental-headed surrounds. There is a 20th-century plank door at the lower left, which is sheltered by a flat stone canopy with a moulded margin supported by moulded stone brackets.
No 2, situated in the center, is possibly the earliest building in the row. It features two 2-light wood casements with timber lintels on the first floor, and on the ground floor, there is one 2-light and one 3-light casement flanking a 20th-century plank door, which has a small projecting stone canopy supported by metal brackets.
No 3, at the left-hand end of the row, has likely been converted for domestic use from the former mill building. The two left-hand bays now serve as a store, with plank infill and a single square ashlar column dividing the bays on the first floor. It has a plank door and a fixed 4-light casement on the ground floor. The first floor of the three bays to the right once matched that of the two left-hand bays, but the areas between the square ashlar piers have been infilled, and 3-light casements have been inserted into the blocking. There are also two 4-light casements on the ground floor, with all windows featuring segmental-headed surrounds. A central 20th-century plank door is accompanied by a single light window to the left, and there are two 20th-century fixed casements at ground floor level within the left gable end, along with a blocked doorway above.
No mill machinery remains inside, and the interiors of the cottages were not inspected. The site has been used for milling since the 11th century, and the building as it stands today was used as a paper mill from 1816 to 1846.
