Description
Irongate Farmhouse is a large farmhouse built in the very late 18th century, with alterations made during the 19th century. It is noted in the Victoria County History as being constructed after the 1793 enclosures. The building features random coursed rubble stone that is partially faced in roughcast, with ashlar bays, and has a stone slate roof with stone end stacks. The farmhouse has an 'L' shape, consisting of a single main range with a small service wing at the rear on the right, and a lower parallel range on the left within the internal angle. The main block has two storeys and an attic, while the service range is single storey with an attic.
The south front of the farmhouse showcases two large 19th-century canted bays with hipped roofs, each two storeys high and featuring 12-pane sash windows on each face of both storeys. Flanking the central entrance, there is a single 12-pane window on the first floor and a door below, all set within a flush stone surround and accessed by two stone steps. The door has arched and glazed top panels, with the lower two panels being flush. The bays have a stepped offset between the floors. There are also two small gabled dormers on the eaves, each with twin 6-pane casements.
At the rear, the service wing has a very tall brick ridge stack. The long range features two gabled dormers across the eaves and one small leaded 2-light casement window below the eaves on the left. A 20th-century door is located below with a cambered voussoir head, and the other windows are scattered throughout the building.
