Description

The Old Cottage is a large detached cottage located in Rodmarton village, recorded as Church House in 1544 and likely built shortly before this date. It was converted into a house in the 17th century, during which an inserted stack was added. The building is constructed of rubble stone with flush quoins and features a stone slate roof, along with stone end stacks and a ridge stack, all of which have offset and moulded cornices.

The cottage has a single range of two storeys, with a single storey extension to the right that includes a partly external stone stack with weathered offsets. There are four windows: three are 2-light stone mullions with arched heads set in square frames, and one is a twin casement to the right. The ground floor has three twin casements with timber lintels, and all windows have leaded glazing.

The stone doorway is located to the right of centre in the third bay, featuring a chamfered and stopped depressed Tudor arch and a plank door with two large strap hinges. Inside, the main room has a high ceiling, likely originally used as a meeting room, and steps down from the front door. It includes chamfered beams and a very large low timber bressumer fireplace, with a stone newel stair below the inserted stack.
