Description
The stable, barn, and open-fronted cart shed located about 10 meters north of Barrington Farmhouse is a Grade II listed structure. The stable block and open-fronted cartshed likely date from the late 18th century, while the stable and barn were built in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, with mostly stone slate roofing and slate on the west-facing pitch of the barn. The barn porch features corrugated asbestos roofing.
The layout is 'L'-shaped, with the cartshed at the northern end. It has four open bays divided by square dressed stone piers, topped with a continuous timber lintel on the east side. The first floor has two 2-light wood casements, and access to the loft is provided by steps leading up to a plank door in the west wall. The barn is located at the south gable end and has a projecting gabled porch on the west side, which includes a 20th-century extension that is not of special interest. There is a double doorway in the wall opposite and ventilation slits.
Inside, the barn features four bays and a brick threshing floor. The stable block is positioned at right angles to the barn and is connected by a 2-bay store, which was formerly two storeys but is now a single storey without a roof as of the last survey in June 1986. The stable block has two storeys and a symmetrical entrance front with a central plank door that has a stone lintel with a keystone. There are two-light windows on either side of the door, one of which has shutters, and two 2-light wood casements on the first floor. A double flight of steps at the left gable end leads up to a plank door for loft access. The right end of the roof is hipped, with flat coping at the left gable end and king post roof trusses. This structure is part of the Barrington Park Estate.
