Description
Hatherop Downs Buildings is a field farm complex dating from the mid to late 19th century. It features coursed rock-faced masonry and a tile roof. The structure consists of a single long range with cross-wings at the center and to the right, and an open end to the left, primarily comprising single-storey and loft spaces.
The central gabled wing has a square vent tower on the ridge and a cambered stone arch doorway with a large pitch-hole and an open oculus above. The small cross-wing at the right end also has a cambered stone arch and an open oculus above, with an additional entry immediately to the left that features troubled timber doors and a wooden boarded gable. The left end has a five-bay open area supported by timber piers, and the rear wall extends to the southwest to form one side of an enclosed courtyard at the back. There is also an additional lower gable wing behind the central cross-wing, which contributes to the courtyard. This complex represents a late but well-preserved example of farm buildings in the model farm tradition.
