Description
No. 5, Batsford Estate is a semi-detached estate cottage built in the late 19th century, likely designed by Sir Ernest George and Peto for Lord Redesdale. The cottage features coursed squared and dressed limestone with a concrete tile roof, limestone gable coping, and a cement rendered brick stack. It has a T-shaped plan with a gabled projecting porch facing the road. The building is two stories high with irregular fenestration, including two and three-light stone-mullioned casements that have stopped hoods in the gable ends. The porch has a flat chamfered, depressed arched entrance with a plank door inside. There is an axial twin flue stack, and the saddleback gable coping has moulded kneelers at the eaves. The porch also features roll-moulded gable coping with moulded kneelers. The interior has not been inspected. This cottage is one of several similar estate cottages located prominently opposite the Church of St. Mary, and it is included for its group value.
