Description
No. 4, Batsford Estate is an estate cottage built in the late 19th century by Sir Ernest George and Peto for Lord Redesdale. It is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a thin limestone slate roof that features limestone gable coping and an eaves cornice. The building has a cement rendered brick stack and an L-shaped plan, with the main body having a principal gable on the left and an outshut at the rear.
The main body is two storeys high and has one window. The principal gable includes a two-light stone-mullioned window, while below it is a four-light canted bay window. The windows are late 19th or early 20th century metal casements. To the right of the principal gable, there is a plank door set in a plain flush surround, topped with a gabled hood. The roof features saddleback gable coping, a moulded eaves cornice, and kneelers. A prominent, projecting four-flue stack in the shape of an 'X' is located on the left gable end.
The interior has not been inspected. This cottage is part of a group of similar cottages situated in a prominent location opposite the Church of St. Mary.
