Description

LONG NEWNTON A434 ST 89 SE (north side) 7/121 Barn about 60m east of the Folly Farmhouse GV II

Large barn. Probably mid C18. Rubble stone with quoins, stone slate roof to west, corrugated material to east. Two pairs of opposed projecting gabled cart entries with segmental relieving arches over timber lintel and segmental arch on wall plane. Doors survive on north west entry, south west entry is filled with 3 bays of windows and doors. Both have entries on returns facing centre which now has shingled lean-to. On outer side of each western entry is 3-bay lean-to open animal shelter with tapering rubble pillars marking bays. East side has corrugated lean-tos of C20. Partition wall immediately south of northern pair of entries divides barn into 4 bays to north and 6 to south, king post trusses with 3 purlins, central 2 bays with renewed timber on south side. Partition wall and south gable wall both have segmental headed pitch hole with dressed stone surround and dropped keystone. Plain pitch hole to north now blocked. Otherwise slit vents throughout.
