Description
Number 66 is a house dating from approximately 1820 to 1834, shown on Merrett’s 1834 map but not on the Post Office Map of 1820. It is constructed of stucco over brick, with a slate roof. A brick and stucco stack is located at the right end. The property has a double-depth plan with a service range to the rear.
The exterior features two storeys over a basement, with three first-floor windows. Decorative stucco details include four incised full-height Doric pilasters at the ends and between windows, linked by a segmental arcade, a frieze, and a cornice with a blocking course and copings. There are sills to the windows, which are 1/1 sash windows in plain reveals. A central, fluted distyle Doric portico has engaged pilasters, an architrave, a frieze, and a dentil cornice with a blocking course. The portico contains a part-glazed, six-panel door with a lozenge frieze and a fanlight. The left return side has a similar three-pilaster arcade, partially concealed by a later build, but visible behind two eight-pane French windows with margin-lights and overlights. The rear elevation contains a small round-arched staircase sash with margin-lights and coloured glass.
The interior of the house was not inspected during the listing process. Attached area railings feature an X- and scrolled quatrefoil motif. Number 66 occupies a good corner site and relates to the group value of numbers 68-92 (even) Hewlett Road. It is situated on a route from Cheltenham to the Cotswolds.
