Description
Numbers 135 to 145 form a terrace of six houses with attached railings to Number 145, dating from approximately 1806 to 1835. Later additions and alterations have also been made. The houses are constructed of brick with stucco facades, topped by slate roofs. Stucco party-wall stacks with cornices are present at Numbers 135, 139, 141, 143, and 145. Iron railings and gates are also part of the exterior.
The houses are two storeys high, with a basement to Number 145, and have a total of twelve first-floor windows (two per house). Architectural detailing includes horizontal rustication to the ground floor where original, as well as voussoirs above the ground-floor openings. A moulded band runs along the first floor. Full-height Doric pilasters are located at the ends of Number 139, on the right end of Number 135, and at the left end of Numbers 141, 143, and 145. Shorter Doric pilasters, often corbelled through the first floor, are featured on the left end of Numbers 135, 137, and on the right end of Numbers 141, 143, and 145. A frieze, cornice, and blocking course with copings are present, except at Number 141. The original windows are 8/8 sashes; those on the ground floor (except at Number 137) have cambered arches. Number 141 has a 20th-century bay window in the former entrance area, topped with a tent roof. Entrances are located on the left at Number 135, within an arch on the left at Number 137, and on the right for the remaining houses. Number 139 features a four-panel door, while the other houses have 20th-century doors with fanlights in cambered-arched surrounds. Numbers 141, 143, and 145 have additional entrances on the right, leading to passages. Number 137 has a tall, wide, elliptically-arched opening on the left with a tooled arch. The interior was not inspected during the listing process. Attached to Number 145 are spearhead area railings with stanchions. Fairview Road was developed from approximately 1806, occupying a former open field that was enclosed by an Act of Parliament in 1806 to enable development as building land.
