Description
A terrace of sixteen houses located at 2 to 32 Victoria Place, dating from approximately 1830 to 1840, were built by Urch and Seabright for numbers 2 to 24. The construction is stucco over brick, with concealed roof space and brick party-wall stacks. The terrace has two storeys, with varying window arrangements of 2:2:3:3:3:2:2:3, aside from a consistent two-window arrangement in other sections. Stucco detailing includes a first-floor band, a crowning cornice where original, a blocking course, and copings. The original windows are largely 6/6 and 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes; some are now 1/1 horned sashes, and some openings are blind. All windows are in plain reveals with sills. Original entrances feature four-panel doors, some now part-glazed with fanlights; some fanlights have radial glazing bars, and some doorways are blocked. The interior was not inspected. This terrace is a substantially complete surviving example of an artisan terrace. It is shown as partly built on Merrett's Map of 1834. Other buildings by Urch and Seabright include numbers 106 to 116 Fairview Road. This listing recognizes the group value of these buildings as a cohesive example of Victorian architecture and their contribution to the historic character of the area.
