Description

Numbers 68 to 92 form a terrace of 13 houses with attached railings, built around 1820 to 1850. The houses are stucco-faced over brick, with slate roofs, brick and stucco party-wall stacks and iron railings. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, incorporating service ranges to the rear.

The houses are two storeys high, with basements and some attic additions to the rear, each house originally having three windows on the first floor. A first-floor band is present, along with a moulded frieze where original, and a continuous cornice with a coped blocking course. The original windows are 6/6 sashes, though some have been replaced with 1/1 horned sashes. The basement windows are generally 4/8 or 10/10 sashes.

The front entrances feature 6-raised-and-fielded-panel doors, some with part-glazing, reeded friezes and fanlights. The fanlights contain a variety of decorative glazing patterns, including batwing, circe, lattice, web and radial glazing bars. The rear of the houses retains some original 6/6 sashes. Interiors retain original plasterwork and joinery.

The attached railings are particularly noteworthy, with arrowhead designs between the houses. Variations include dogbars and urn finials to the stanchions. The area railings display scrolled lozenge motifs at number 72, sticks at numbers 84 and 86, an X-motif at number 88, and arrowhead designs at number 90. The terrace forms a continuous group with number 66 Hewlett Road, and represents a substantial example of an artisan terrace on an approach road to Cheltenham.
