Description
Numbers 79 and 81 are a pair of terraced houses dating to approximately 1820-1834, as shown on Merrett’s map of 1834. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with brick and stucco end and party wall stacks, and have a concealed roof with iron balconies. The houses follow a double-depth plan with two-storey service wings to the rear.
The exterior is three storeys with a basement and six windows on the first floor (a 3:3 arrangement). Stucco details include plat bands on the first and second floors, a frieze, and a cornice. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout, taller on the first floor, with tooled architraves (blind to the second floor, on the second window). The entrances have six-fielded-panel doors with overlights. The left return has three blind openings on each floor. The rear elevation includes some 6/6 sashes.
The first-floor balconies have an ogeed scroll motif; bars are present on the second-floor windows. The subsidiary features include lancet area railings and gates on the left, and railings with an X-motif balustrade to the right. The porches have scrolled uprights and openwork friezes featuring a reverse teardrop motif. The houses were known as Hewlett Street on Merrett’s Map. The interior has not been inspected.
