Description

The front wall of Royscott House, located at number 85, is part of an office block built in 1823 and heavily restored in the 1920s to match the right wing of the Municipal Offices at numbers 47-83. The wall is constructed of stucco over brick and features a concealed roof and an iron balcony. It stands four storeys high above a basement, with a window arrangement of 1:4:1 on the first floor. Architectural details include ground-floor rustication and cornices above the second and attic floors. The end bays project forward and are framed by pilasters on the upper floors. The first-floor windows have tooled architraves, with the end windows set in taller, wider round-arched recesses. A band of Greek key ornament runs between the first and second floors. The windows are primarily 6/6 sashes, with 3/3 sashes on the third floor. The entrance is located on the right side, featuring a flight of steps leading to a four-panel door with sidelights and an overlight with lozenge glazing. A continuous balcony is present on the first floor. This wall is included to complete the terrace of numbers 47-83 on the Promenade. Historically, the Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined drive to the Sherborne Spa, and by 1826 it had become a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walks on either side. The buildings on the northwest side were the first to be developed, completing the terrace of numbers 47-83.
