Description

A terrace of six houses, now shops, was built around 1820-30 with later additions and alterations, including 20th-century shop fronts to numbers 21 and 29 and 31. The houses are stucco over brick with concealed roof, stucco party-wall stacks, and an iron verandah and balcony. The houses are three storeys high, with an attic to the right return, featuring 20 first-floor windows (three per house, except for two on the right). The ground floor projects forward. Stucco detailing includes a continuous first-floor sill band. The right-hand house has horizontal rustication to the ground floor, extending to the right return, topped with end pilasters. The left pilaster is decorated with carved floral detail in a sunk panel, while a continuous frieze and cornice top the building, finishing with a low parapet. The right-hand first-floor windows have tooled architraves and a continuous cornice resting on console brackets. Originally, all windows were 6/6 sashes in plain reveals with sills. The ground floor now features a late 20th-century banking hall frontage on the left with glazed entrances, and other glazed shop fronts, some with turned mullions. Attached to the right-hand end is a glazed verandah with Art Nouveau-style ironwork. Numbers 23 and 25 share a similar balustrade with a broad verandah. The Promenade was laid out in 1818 as a tree-lined drive leading to Sherborne Spa (the site of the Queen’s Hotel), with a spacious gravel walk on each side. By 1845, the south-east side had become mainly devoted to professional and business establishments. The terrace continues with numbers 33-45 Promenade.
