Description

These are a terrace of four houses, built around 1822-1834, and now used as shops, offices, and flats. Later additions and alterations have occurred, including mid-20th century ground floor shop fronts to numbers 19-23.

The houses are five storeys with attics and have eight windows on the first floor. They are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with stucco facades, painted except for number 17, and have a Welsh slate roof. The roofs are largely concealed, with ridge and end stacks to the left. The roof is hipped to the left. The façade features paired Doric pilasters at the ends and between the houses, extending from the first to the third floors.

The first floor has tall 6/9 sash windows throughout. The second floor has 6/6 sashes, with sill boxes to both floors at number 19. The third floor has 3/6 sashes with sills. Windows on the first, second, and third floors have plain reveals and moulded surrounds. The fourth floor has casement windows with plain reveals, topped by copings.

The ground floor of number 17 has a four-panel door with a divided overlight and a tripartite window of three 1/1 sashes. The other ground floor areas have undergone 20th-century alterations, including horizontal rustication on numbers 21 and 23. Dormer windows are present in the attics, to the left and to two of the right-hand houses.

A continuous ornate cast-iron balcony is present at number 17, with replacement balconies at numbers 21 and 23. The interior of the building was not inspected. Originally known as The Promenade, Dormer Place was laid out around 1822 and built by 1834.
