Description
Ormond Terrace Numbers 16 and 17 are two terraced houses built around 1834 to 1840, and now used as a restaurant and dental surgery. They are constructed of stucco over brick, with a concealed roof and a stucco stack with iron railings and a window box. The houses are double depth, with hallways on the left side.
The exterior is two storeys high, with a basement level, and features four first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes rustication on the ground floor, drawn into voussoirs over the openings on the left side. There's a raised architrave with a keystone above the entrance, and first-floor bands surmounted by pilasters with Doric capitals. A crowning entablature and blocking course with copings completes the facade. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows; the ground floor has tripartite, cambered-headed windows with a 2/2 horizontal pane between two 2/2 sashes, all set in plain reveals. The basement windows are 6/6 sashes. The entrance on the left has a flight of steps leading to a recessed, part-glazed, four-panel door with an overlight.
The interior retains original joinery and plasterwork, including a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail on the left side. The interior has not been fully inspected.
The attached railings have spearhead area and dividing sections with two levels of bars and dogbars. Railings to the sides of the steps have stick balusters, while those on the right side feature an X-motif. The window box on the left has a stick and lattice design. The site was shown on a map from 1834, but no buildings were present at that time.
