Description

102, 104, and 106 Promenade is a terrace of three houses that have been converted into shops. Built around 1820 to 1840, the buildings feature ground-floor shop fronts that were added between 1930 and 1950. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone over brick, with a concealed roof and a stucco stack at the right end.

The terrace is two storeys high and has nine first-floor windows, with three for each house. The central section projects forward and has a pediment, supported by Ionic columns at the ends and between the windows. The side sections feature Doric columns between the windows and are topped with a crowning entablature. The ground floor projects out and has glazed shop fronts with banded pilasters in between, while a dentil cornice remains on the right side. The right return has a low parapet that ramps up to the centre, creating a feature with the stack.

Interior photographs from 1991 show the upper stage of a narrow open-well staircase with embellished rods, although the interior has not been fully inspected.

Historically, the Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue stretching from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa, which is now the site of the Queen's Hotel. By 1826, it had become a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walks on either side. Originally lined with elegant houses, by 1845, much of the southeast side had transitioned to professional or business establishments, as noted by Rowe in his Cheltenham Guide published in 1850.
