Description

No. 100 Promenade is a terraced house that has been converted into a shop, built around 1820 to 1840. The conversion to a shop likely occurred around 1845, with the shop front added around 1900 and reglazing done in 1980. The building features stucco over brick with a concealed roof.

It stands two storeys high and has three first-floor windows. The first floor includes 6/6 sash windows set in plain reveals, topped with a crowning entablature. The ground floor shop front is characterized by outer pilasters with sunk panels, egg-and-dart moulding, and a dentil cornice. The windows are canted inwards, leading to a glazed door with an overlight.

The Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa, which is now the site of the Queen's Hotel. By 1826, it had evolved into a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walks on either side. Originally lined with elegant houses, by 1845, the southeast side had largely transitioned to professional or business establishments, as noted by Rowe in his Cheltenham Guide published in 1850.
