Description
No. 92 Promenade is a terraced house that has been converted into a shop. It was built around 1820 to 1840, with later additions and alterations, including the conversion to a shop around 1845 and a ground-floor shop front added in the 1960s. The building features ashlar stonework over brick, a slate roof, and a brownish-red brick stack at the right end.
The exterior is two storeys high with three first-floor windows. The first floor has horned 1/1 sash windows, and there is a crowning entablature and blocking course. The ground floor consists of a glazed shop front and a glazed entrance. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, the Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue leading from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa, which is now the site of the Queen's Hotel. By 1826, it had become a carriage drive with gravelled walks on either side. The buildings on the northwest side were among the first to be developed. Originally, both sides of the Promenade featured rows of elegant houses, but by 1845, as noted by Rowe in his Cheltenham Guide, nearly the entire southeast side was occupied by professional or business establishments.
