Description

No. 90 Promenade is a terraced house that has been converted into a shop. It was built around 1820 to 1840 and has undergone later additions and alterations. The building features remnants of a late 19th-century shop front on the right side, while the rest of the ground floor has a late 20th-century shop front. The exterior is constructed of ashlar over brick with a concealed roof and a stucco stack at the right end.

The building stands three storeys high and has three first-floor windows. The original windows are 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes, with those on the first floor set in roll-moulded reveals and adorned with cornices on consoles. A sill band runs along the first floor, topped by a frieze and cornice, and there is a low parapet with copings. The ground floor features a glazed shop front with two off-centre entrances; the right entrance is a glazed door set within the remains of the late Victorian shop front, which includes a panelled end pilaster, a bracket, and a frieze.

The interior has not been inspected. The ground floor forms a single commercial unit with No. 88. Historically, the Promenade was established in 1818 as a tree-lined avenue leading from the Colonnade in the High Street to the Sherborne Spa, which is now the site of the Queen's Hotel. By 1826, it had developed into a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walks on either side. The northwest side was the first to be developed, and although it originally featured rows of elegant houses, by 1845, most of the southeast side had been converted to professional or business establishments, as noted by Rowe in his Cheltenham Guide published in 1850.
