Description

This is a terrace of six houses, numbered 17 to 27, with attached area railings, built in the 1840s. The houses are located on the south side of Selkirk Street, Cheltenham. The construction is primarily ashlar stone, with brick visible in some areas and some parts now stuccoed. The houses have concealed roofs and brick and stucco party-wall stacks. The detailing includes pilaster strips to the left window bay, a first-floor band to the two houses on the right, and a crowning cornice, which is missing from the left (No. 27). The windows are mostly 8/8 and 6/6 sashes, with some in tooled architraves; the basement windows have 3/6 sashes. The entrances are on the right side, with roll-edged steps leading to mainly 4- and 6-fielded-panel doors with overlights, some of which are divided, and two entrances are in tooled architraves. The interior of No. 27 contains a dogleg staircase with stick balusters; the interiors of the other houses were not inspected. Subsidiary features include lancet area railings and gates with ornate spearhead finials to the newel posts.
