Description
This is a villa, built around 1840 to 1850, and later converted into flats. The builder was likely Edward Cope. The exterior is stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof. It has brick stacks, plastered and decorated with cornices. The plan is of a double-depth form with a double-pitched roof.
The villa is three storeys high with a basement, and originally had five windows on the first floor. The central bay is recessed and the stucco detailing includes ornate window jambs and wide sills supported by cornices on corbels. Ground-floor windows have tent hoods; first-floor windows have decorative friezes and sills on shaped feet; a continuous sill band runs along the second floor. The top of the building features a moulded frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course.
The original central entrance had steps leading to a porch with two Ionic columns recessed within an outer frame, a frieze, and a cornice. The original double doors, with sidelights and an overlight, are now fixed. A more recent entrance porch has been added on the right. The windows are mostly original 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes.
The interior was not inspected during the listing process. The ground-floor window boxes have decorative supports with a rail and scroll design. The Circus in which the villa stands was laid out in 1839 to 1840 by Cope, on land acquired from Joseph Pitt, although the overall design of the Pittville Estate was by John Forbes.
