Description
This is a villa, dating from approximately 1840 to 1850, and now used as a nursing home. It was likely built by Edward Cope. The exterior is stucco over brick, with a renewed tile roof and stacks to the ridge and right end. The architectural style is Tudor Gothic.
The villa is two storeys high with attics in the gables, and has a basement. It has three windows on the first floor. The end bays project forward and are gabled, with further ranges set back to the returns; the range to the left is full height and gabled. Stucco detailing includes hoodmoulds with label stops over most openings. The central entrance has a four-panel door with sidelights and an overlight, set within a pointed-arched recess. The ground floor has four-light wooden mullion windows with two levels of transoms. The first floor has a similar three-light window to the left, a two-light window to the centre, and a rectangular bay to the right, featuring 2/1 sash windows. The attics have pairs of 4/2 sash windows, and there is a skylight in the centre. A basement is concealed.
The interior has not been inspected.
The Circus itself was laid out in 1839-40 by Cope on land purchased from Joseph Pitt, although the basic layout of the wider Pittville Estate was designed by John Forbes.
