Description

Sydenham Barton is a farmhouse with origins from the 18th century or earlier, which was extended and remodeled in the 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. The building has one projecting stone stack, one stack on the ridge, and one lateral stack on the north front, forming an L-plan layout. The west block may retain elements of a late 17th-century design, originally consisting of three rooms and a through passage, with one rear right projecting lateral stack. A second stack, now internal, may have heated the hall.

Adjoining the coach house and stables to the north of Sydenham House is a wing at right angles to the west block, likely a later addition. There is also a single-storey south-facing addition to the west block, which was probably originally used as a dairy. The building has two storeys and a three-bay west front. While the fenestration is symmetrical, the front door is not centered, resulting in two rooms at the higher end and one at the lower end. The structure features freestone quoins and flat stone arches over the openings. The front door is from the 20th century, and the windows are 19th or early 20th-century casements with three lights, each containing eight panes.

On the south front of the east wing, there is a 20th-century stone porch to the left. The ground floor has a four-light casement with ten panes per light, and the first floor has three two-light casements with square-headed panes under timber lintels. Inside, the building features 19th-century joinery and a 19th-century king post and strut roof throughout.
