Description

Nantellan is a farmhouse, now a house, likely dating from the mid-18th century. It was substantially refronted and extended around the early to mid-19th century, with further additions and alterations in the later 19th century and 20th century. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble, originally rendered, with brick dressings. It has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends.

The original layout was probably a two-room plan with a central entrance, later expanded with a single-room addition to the left, incorporating a gable-end stack for heating. A stair hall was extended to the rear of the entrance hall in the later 19th century, alongside additional service rooms to the rear right and left.

The front of the building is asymmetrical, presenting five bays to the right of the original structure and one bay to the left. The central bay features a 19th-century six-panelled door with a fanlight incorporating 20th-century radial glazing bars. Flanking this are two 19th-century 16-pane sashes. The first floor has five 19th-century 12-pane sashes. The left-hand bay has a 19th-century 16-pane sash on the ground floor and a 12-pane sash above. All windows feature brick jambs and timber lintels. A line in the masonry indicates a raising of the roof level around the late 19th century. An external stack and a stone storey and loft lean-to with a corrugated iron roof are situated at the right end of the building. To the left of the stack, a straight joint in the masonry defines an outshut with a catslide roof. A 20th-century 12-pane sash is located at ground and first floor levels to the right of the stack.

At the rear, a gabled wing houses the stairwell, with a 19th-century two-light casement with sidelights on the ground floor, and an upper 24-pane sash window dating from the late 19th century, with a timber lintel. To the left is a single-storey outshut with a loft, incorporating two 20th-century casements on the ground floor, and three gabled dormers with plate-glass sashes. A rear lateral stack of the main range rises above the outshut.

The interior features an entrance hall leading to a large stair hall at the rear, with six-panelled doors to all rooms to the right and left. The stair is an open well with stick balusters. One room to the left contains a fireplace with a re-sited, bolection-moulded chimney-piece. Both front rooms have panelled shutters to the windows. On the first floor, the stair hall has a reeded cornice.
