Description
GRAMPOUND MILL LANE (east side), Grampound SW 9248-9348 WITH CREED 7/74 Town Mills - GV II
Watermill. Mid C19 with additions of later C19 and few later alterations. Slatestone rubble with brick dressings. Scantle slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. Plan: The original mill building appears to be the range to right, which was powered from a waterwheel at the rear; this range has a hoist housing at the front. Probably in the later C19, one bay was added to left, with a waterwheel at the left end. Exterior: 3 storeys, with two bays to right and one to left. To right, there is a plank door and 3-light multipane casement at ground floor. First floor has two 2- light 7-pane C19 casements and second floor has two 2-light C19 casements of 4 panes and 3 panes, all with segmental brick arches with keystones. The hoist housing is at upper level to left, with gabled front. There is a straight joint in the masonry to left; at ground first and second floors a 2-light 5-pane C19 casement and a stable type plank door to right, all with segmental brick arches with keystones. At the left end there is an overshot waterwheel, in cast iron with wooden floats and wooden launder. C19 casement at each level. At the right end there is a large C20 addition, not included in the listing. Interior: Not accessible at time of survey (September 1987) but said to contain the watershaft and some other machinery, with millstones, and a wheelpit inside the mill to rear right.
