Description

Town Mills is a watermill located on Grampound Mill Lane, dating from the mid-19th century, with later additions and a few alterations from the late 19th century. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble with brick dressings and features a scantle slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends.

The original mill structure appears to be the section on the right, which was powered by a waterwheel at the rear and includes a hoist housing at the front. A bay was likely added to the left in the late 19th century, which also features a waterwheel at the left end. The building has three storeys, with two bays on the right and one on the left. The right side has a plank door and a three-light multipane casement on the ground floor. The first floor features two two-light, seven-pane casements, while the second floor has two two-light casements with four panes and three panes, all adorned with segmental brick arches and keystones. The hoist housing is located at the upper level on the left, with a gabled front. There is a straight joint in the masonry to the left, where the ground, first, and second floors have a two-light, five-pane casement and a stable-type plank door on the right, also with segmental brick arches and keystones. At the left end, there is an overshot waterwheel made of cast iron with wooden floats and a wooden launder, along with a casement at each level. The right end features a large 20th-century addition, which is not included in the listing.

The interior was not accessible during the survey in September 1987, but it is reported to contain the watershaft, some machinery, millstones, and a wheelpit located at the rear right of the mill.
