Description
No 16, including the forecourt, retaining walls, railings, and gates, is a house from the early 18th century located in Clovelly. The building is rendered and colourwashed, featuring a wooden modillion eaves cornice and a gable-ended slate roof with a clay ridge, along with an end brick stack on the right. It is part of a long row of buildings that run down the hill and is attached to houses number 15 and 17. The house has a symmetrical layout with reception rooms on either side of a central stair hall.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical arrangement of four windows at the first floor, which are 18th-century 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars and some old glass, framed by eared raised cement surrounds. The door is located in the third bay from the left and features an 8-panelled 18th-century design within a wooden surround, topped by a cambered wooden hood with a moulded cornice supported by brackets. The forecourt is paved with slate flags and elevated on the right side, supported by a rubble retaining wall, with iron railings and a gate that has two steps leading up.
Inside, the house retains much of its 18th-century work, including panelling, chimneypieces, a staircase, and some plasterwork.
