Description

Number 96, including the walls and railings of the forecourt, is a house dated 1736, although it has an earlier core. It is constructed of whitewashed brick and flint with a pantiled roof and stands two storeys tall. The building features an irregular bay system. A panelled door is located to the right of centre, sheltered by a portico porch supported by four fluted timber columns that hold up a plain entablature. To the right of the door is one segmental-headed sash window with glazing bars, and to the left are three similar sash windows. On the first floor, there are three flat-headed sash windows with glazing bars. The house has a dentil eaves cornice and a gabled roof. There is a 20th-century internal gable stack on the west side and a late 16th-century ridge stack to the left of centre, which features a square plinth and twin octagonal flues. The west gable has tumbling in the gable head and a datestone from 1736. The east gable displays brick diapering and has four blocked windows. The forecourt is enclosed by ramped walls on both sides, which are closed to the street by railings and gates that likely date from 1736. The railings feature square section stiles with bell caps and circular section verticals with arrow heads set into a brick plinth, and the gates match the design of the railings.
