Description

Ivy House is a building that appears to date from the late 17th century, with an early 18th-century remodelling. It is constructed of coursed and squared rubble and features a Cotswold stone roof. The house has a large chimney located to the left of centre, which has a pair of corniced diagonal stacks. The structure includes one large gable and two smaller gables, all with verges and copings, and retains vestiges of 17th-century windows.

The building is two and a half storeys high and has six windows, which are glazing bar sashes set in beaded stone surrounds, arranged in a pattern of 1:1:2:2, with the latter two in pairs. The three attic windows are casements with segmental heads and corniced keystones. On the ground floor to the left, there is an early 18th-century bow window topped with a tented lead roof. The doorway features a stone hood supported by carved consoles, leading to a nine-panel door set in panelled reveals, which is similar to the north end terrace but opens into a former coach entry. In front of the house, there are low 19th-century arrow-head railings.

The interior of Ivy House is well-preserved and was likely remodelled in the early to mid-19th century, incorporating parts of the earlier structure. It features arch-braced collar trusses in two sections of the roof (the centre and north end) and the upper part of a splat baluster staircase, with turned balusters in the lower section. There is an early 18th-century fireplace in the central first-floor room, along with numerous period features from the 18th and early 19th centuries, including the main staircase. The house is thought to have originally been designed as a central hall with side wings.
