Description
This is an outbuilding located approximately one meter northwest of Higher Thorne Cottage. It is a Grade II listed structure that was originally a threshing barn, shippon, and calf house. The shippon dates back to the 17th century, while the barn and calf house were added in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of cob set on a stone plinth and features corrugated iron and asbestos roofs. It has an L-shaped plan, with the barn on the left side and the calf house in a projecting wing to the right. There are timber lintels above the 19th-century plank doors. The calf house extends towards the rear door of Higher Thorne Cottage and includes a central 20th-century stable door. Inside, the building has A-frame trusses with pegged collars, trenching for through purlins, and notched apexes. This outbuilding is included for its group value with Higher Thorne Cottage.
