Description

Goutisland Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, which was remodeled in the 17th century and had its left end rebuilt around 1840. It is constructed of coursed slatestone rubble and features a gabled slate roof. The left end has a 19th-century brick stack, while there is a 17th-century stone lateral stack at the rear. Originally designed as an open-hall plan in the 15th century, a stack and first floor were added in the 17th century, and it was remodeled into a three-unit house in the mid-19th century. The building has two storeys and a four-window range. A mid-19th-century porch, located to the left of center, features a pointed brick arch over double-leaf doors. There are segmental brick arches above 20th-century casements, and straight joints to the right of the porch indicate the former position of a hall window. A mid-19th-century outshut and a two-storey wing are present at the rear.

Inside, the central room contains a 17th-century stop-chamfered beam and a chamfered bressummer over a 17th-century open fireplace against the rear wall. The curved feet of three 15th-century raised crucks can still be seen above the central hall and the room to the right, while the two pairs of chamfered hall crucks have stop-chamfered wall plates, and there is a plain cruck to the right. The mid-19th-century roof trusses include some reused 15th-century roof timbers, which are smoke-blackened, and a 15th-century purlin with a through-splayed scarf joint has been reused as a ridge purlin.
