Description

The barn at Old Thorn House Farm, located approximately 30 metres to the north-west of the house, is a Grade II listed structure, likely dating from the 17th century. It features a cruck frame and is constructed of coursed, squared gritstone rubble, topped with a 20th-century cement-tile roof. The barn is partly two-storey and consists of three internal bays. It has large quoins and a central cart entry with large, heavy-hung boarded doors set in quoined reveals. To the left of the cart entry, there is an altered stable door and a casement window opening. On the right end, there is a door in a quoined surround, with a casement window to its left on each floor. The gable ends are adorned with moulded kneelers, each topped with a carved finial, and the gable copings feature matching apex finials. Inside, there is a stone-paved threshing floor and a large opposed cart entry. The left side contains two pairs of cruck frames with ogee-profile blades, while a wall tie beam supports the right truss. An early principal-rafter truss is present on the right, although the rest of the roof has been renewed. There is a low building attached to the right and a large modern shed at the rear, which are not of special interest.
