Description

A terrace of four houses built in the early or mid 19th century, located on Silver Street, Bideford. The houses have solid rendered front walls and slate roofs. Brick chimneys are present on each end-wall and between numbers 12 and 13; the chimney between numbers 12 and 13 is rendered, while the other is red brick, except for a rebuilt section at the top of the right-hand chimney. The terrace was originally designed as two mirrored pairs, each with a central doorway and a window at the end of each storey. Numbers 11 and 12 have an additional window centrally placed above the doorways, likely belonging to number 12. The doorways of numbers 11 and 12 are flanked by pilasters with pointed-arched panels, which support an entablature with a bracketed cornice; the doors are six-panelled, with the top two panels glazed and a small-paned fanlight above in number 11. Doorways at numbers 13 and 14 are similar but lack the panelled pilasters, and instead have a cornice on large brackets; the door at number 14 is four-panelled. All windows have flat, shaped surrounds with jambs resembling masonry quoins. Number 12 has six-paned box-framed sashes; number 14 has ten-paned sashes on the ground floor and eight-paned sashes on the second floor. Sash windows with horns are found at numbers 11 and 13, each with two upright glazing-bars forming margin-panes. Three large cement eagles and a cherub-head are attached to the wall face of numbers 13 and 14, a later addition. The interior has not been inspected.
