Description

This is a terrace of four cottages at 73, 75, 77, and 79 Mary Street, Bovey Tracey. They likely formed part of a larger house originally, dating from the 16th or 17th century. The cottages have solid, rendered walls, likely constructed of cob or stone, and mostly asbestos-slated roofs. Number 79 has real slate covered with tar, while number 73 has a lower roofline, likely because it was re-roofed to match the adjacent property at number 71. Chimneystacks are present on the ridge of the left-hand gable of number 79, and at the left-hand end of number 77. Number 75 features a prominent, projecting chimney stack in its front wall, incorporating offsets and a tapered cap, with the upper portion of the shaft constructed of granite ashlar. The cottages are two storeys high and have an irregular arrangement of windows, five windows wide along the front. While some windows have been replaced with modern versions, the three second-storey windows of numbers 75 and 79 retain 19th-century wood casements, each with two lights containing three panes of glass. Number 73 has a wide doorway with a plank door to the right of the front chimney stack, which may have served as the original entrance before the house was divided. Number 75 has a 19th-century door with two panels below and a glazed upper panel, accompanied by a plain rectangular fanlight. Number 79 also has a 19th-century two-panelled door with the upper panel glazed. The interior has not been inspected, but may contain early features of interest, possibly hidden beneath plaster. Numbers 73 and 77 have PVC windows, including a door of similar material at number 77.
