Description

This is a late 16th or 17th century shop with living accommodation above, and a rear section now used as a separate house. The building has solid walls, with a section of exposed stone rubble on the south wall. The east gable is covered with asbestos slates, and the roof is asbestos slate, hipped at the rear. A prominent granite ashlar chimneystack, dating from the late 16th or 17th century, stands on the south wall towards the east end. It has offsets, weatherings (one seemingly designed for a thatched roof), and a tapered top. A rendered stack with offsets is located at the west end of the south wall, and a pair of rendered stacks are on the roof slope slightly east of this stack.

The building is long and narrow, originally with at least three rooms deep, and the original entrance may have been either in Town Hall Place or Fore Street. It has two storeys. The front facing Town Hall Place has a single window on the second storey, a 20th-century 2-light casement. The ground storey has a late 19th-century shop front, with canted glazing and a wooden shaft with a cap and base, the right-hand section being 20th century. A 4-pane wood casement window is set in the gable.

The south front has irregular fenestration. The right-hand, rendered section has a small, late 19th-century display window on the ground storey. The central rubble stone section has a glazed door to the left, alongside a small window. To the right of the door is a 3-light wood window under a segmental arch of yellow brick; the outer lights are 6-paned, with alterations to the centre light in the 20th century. Above, on the second storey, are two wood casement windows of differing heights; the left-hand window has 3 lights, and the right-hand window has 4 lights, each with three panes.

The left-hand section (No. 82 Fore Street) was largely altered in the 20th century and is hard rendered. It has a glazed door and a 2-pane window to the right, with an older 2-light wood casement with 2 panes per light to the left of the ground storey. A 20th century window is situated on the second storey. The interior was not inspected, but local information suggests a large, old open fireplace may exist in the room behind the shop, possibly now covered up. Other features of interest may also be present inside, potentially also covered up.
