Description
The Bell Inn is a public house located in Bovey Tracey, dating back to the 17th century and remodeled in the 19th century. The building features solid rendered walls and a slated roof with clay ridge-tiles. It likely started as a small three-room layout with a through-passage, although the ground floor has been altered to create a single bar area. There are small rear wings on either side and a parallel back block behind the courtyard.
The inn is two stories tall and has a four-window front with a raised band between the storeys. On the ground floor, there are two doorways with a window between them and flanking each side; both doors have four panels, with the two lower panels of the left-hand door flush. The right-hand doorway features a shaped wooden hood with a slated pent roof. The left-hand ground-floor window is an early or mid-19th century six-paned sash, while the other two ground-floor windows, which may be later additions, are wider with two-pane sashes. At the far right-hand end, there is a cart entrance with a rebuilt brick right jamb and a single plank gate on long strap-hinges.
On the upper storey, the left-hand window and the second window from the right have six-paned sashes that match the ground-floor sash. The second window from the left is similar but has only two panes per sash. Above the cart entrance, there is a small sash window with two panes in the upper sash and four in the lower sash. Inside, the ground floor features a large old fireplace with a renewed wood lintel in the centre of the rear wall, which may be the original hall fireplace. The upper storey has not been inspected.
