Description

The Town Hall in Bovey Tracey was built in 1866, with some later additions. It is constructed from squared granite and slatestone rubble, featuring granite and limestone ashlar dressings, while the additions on the north-west side include yellow brick and artificial stone. The building has a hipped roof covered with asbestos slates. At the north-east end, there is a stone gable-parapet with a pair of symmetrically-placed chimneystacks topped with bracketed Italianate details.

The Town Hall has a rectangular plan, with a smaller square projection at the south-west end and a stair turret, likely a later addition, at the north-east end. The main structure resembles an Italian late medieval town hall with Renaissance elements. It stands two storeys tall, with a single-storey addition on the north-west side. The upper storey serves as a piano nobile, featuring five pointed-arched windows on each long side. The basement storey is made of rusticated granite ashlar, topped with a band of limestone.

Tall second-storey windows rise from the basement, their arches made of alternating granite and limestone blocks, resting on a raised limestone impost band. These windows consist of two lights with a single glazed panel above, and the heads of the mullions are decorated with a four-leaved flower. The building is finished with a bracketed cornice, and at each corner, there are low pedestals with shaped tops. At both the north-east and south-west ends, there are pairs of iron rainwater pipes with heads cast in the form of fiery dragons.

Historically, the building was referred to in the 19th century as the Vestry and Town Hall, which included police cells and a constable's residence, and it was constructed at a cost of £1,300.
