Description
The arch at the entrance to the graveyard of the Baptist Chapel in Bovey Tracey is a Grade II listed structure, re-set and dating from the medieval period. It is made of granite and features a two-centred arch with two sets of quarter-round mouldings and convex stops at the base. On top, there is a protective layer of red brick from the 18th or 19th century. The arch is complemented by a 19th-century iron gate with a pointed head, which appears to have been designed specifically for it. On either side of the arch, there are patches of granite ashlar walling that are topped with two pieces of re-set granite, each splayed on the underside with a very slight hollow cut into the splay. Locally, it is believed to be a remnant of a monastery, although no such institution has been documented in the town.
