Description

No. 65 Fore Street is a house dating from the late 16th or 17th century, with a 20th-century addition at the rear. It is constructed of stone and cob, with the front wall covered in roughcast, except for some areas of 20th-century render. The thatched roof, which is the only one remaining in the main street, is hipped at both ends, and there is a 20th-century brick chimney-shaft at the right-hand end. The house has two storeys and a single-storey brick lean-to at the rear.

The front facade features two windows, all of which are 19th-century wooden designs. The doorway is located at the extreme left of the ground storey and has a plank door. In the centre of the ground storey, there are two windows: to the left, a 2-light casement with eight panes per light, and to the right, a lower light with six panes and a three-pane transom light. On the second storey, there are two smaller windows at different levels; to the left, a 2-light casement with six panes per light, and to the right, a similar window with one horizontally sliding sash.

Inside, the ground plan consists of a through passage on the left and a single room on the right. The passage features thick, plain joists above, and at the rear, there is a chamfered wood door-frame that was originally straight-headed but has been converted to a shouldered head in the 20th century. The room includes a projecting chimney-breast with a 20th-century fireplace in the right-hand gable. Adjacent to it, at the rear, is a newel staircase that is partly set into a semi-circular recess in the wall. It is likely that original fireplaces, ceiling beams, roof timbers, and other features are concealed under plaster.
