Description

This is a terrace of three cottages, likely dating from the late 18th century, situated on the north side of West Street, Corfe Castle. The cottages have plastered walls, stone slate roofs with a crested tile ridge, and brick and stone stacks, with a brick stack at the left end, a stone stack at the right end, and a brick stack marking the junction of numbers 10 and 12.

Number 10, at the right end, features a ledged door. Both the ground and first floors have two casement windows with cast iron lattice glazing. Inside, there is evidence of a large fireplace, partially blocked. Number 12 has a two-panel door and similarly, the ground and first floors have two casement windows with cast iron lattice glazing. Number 14, at the left end, has a ledged door on the ground floor. This cottage’s ground floor has two casement windows with glazing bars, and a pent-roofed dormer window in the attic with matching casements.

A front boundary wall is constructed of rubble stone with a mixture of flat and “cock and hen” (uneven) coping. The cottages may have originally formed a single dwelling, as the plans for the three cottages aren’t entirely identical. A rubble stone boundary wall runs along the front.
