Description

Delamore is an early 19th-century villa located in Bishopsteignton. It is constructed of colourwashed stuccoed stone rubble with a two-span slate roof, with the main roof being half-hipped at the ends and the roofs of the left and right blocks also hipped at the ends. Rendered stacks are present. The plan is rectangular, double-depth, with a central entrance leading to a wide stair hall, principal rooms to the left and right, and a separately-roofed service block to the rear.

The villa is set back from the road behind tall garden walls and retains a very intact exterior, with a five-bay front, the central three bays slightly projected with a higher roofline. A decorative glazed verandah, supported by timber trellis posts with chinoiserie spandrels, fronts the central bay, which has been glazed in to form a porch. The front door is half-glazed with margin glazing and a rectangular fanlight. French windows are present to the left and right, with high transoms, margin panes, and sliding shutters. First-floor windows include a 16-pane sash to the left, a 12-pane sash to the centre, and another 16-pane sash to the right; all have shutters which were temporarily removed during a survey in 1987.

The interior, which was not fully inspected during the survey, contains a good wide stair with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail, along with early 19th-century joinery and chimneypieces. Delamore is a particularly fine and unaltered example of a large villa within substantial grounds; this style of house is characteristic of the development of Bishopsteignton in the early 19th century, but only two similar examples remain in the village that have not been subdivided or converted for institutional use. It has group value with its garden walls.
